Narrative and Organisation of the Art Gallery

Narrative : A gallery for an environmentally aware dealer promoting recycled art.

I aimed to make the art gallery a way of exploring different types of recycled art which may be of interest to people in this context and promote recycled art as a way of expression. My main concern was creating an eye catching entry which not only promotes the art of recycling but engages the view to want to come into the art gallery and explore this fascintating form of art, without displaying any external artworks to prolong the sense of a creative imagination. I found that glass would be very effective in moderation so as to not expose the artworks while giving te viewer a sense of what is inside. Therefore i incorporated a large glass curtain on the entrance side of the Building while creating a protruding face on the opposite side to anologically represent the begining of future success of this form of art.

I created my building for an environmentally aware art dealer who aims to incoporate this concept with passive lighting of different intensity and variation throught the building so that viewers can appreciate the form of art in all variations of lighting. Therefore i created a building with scattered openings in the walls and cieling, as the viewer travels through the building light travels with him/her by transferring from from the walls to the cieling and back again creating an exagerated experience of the artwork and consequently a deeper sense of appreciation.

Although the art of creative passive lighting was incorporated i aimed to make the art a focus of the gallery rather than the architecture so as to not overwhelm the viewer, who is already bombare with large abstract artwork of various sizes, colours and complexities. Therefore i incorporated a linear circulation in which the viewer travels through the building without a detour to allow the viewer to appreciate the form of art rather than be concerned with the direction they will travel in next. The art gallery i have created is split into 4 main areas being the main hall displaying artwork, private areas including bedroom bathroom kitchen adjacent to the office and reception, a seperate upstairs room displaying small artworks and sculptures which links to the last area being the external courtyard linked by a staircase.



Precedent study:


For my precendent study i looked at a building that incorporated a fascinating manipulation of light. Jean Novels "vision machin" a 23 storey residential tower located in the Chelsea neighbourhood of mannhatten, the building features a mondorian like curtain wall comprising of 1700 different size panes of glass that change character according to light conditions. This idea inspired me to incorporate the idea of varying light with time i.e as a viewer travels throught the gallery light intensity varies.

Project 3 : Art Gallery

After consideration of the type of art i would like to incorporate and the dealers description i decided than an environmentally aware art dealer with an interest in conserving the environment would have an interest in passive solar lighting. So in order to incoporate passive solar lighting i studied a few creative ways in which previous architecture has done so:

The type of art i worked with my gallery was Recycled art being a way or expressing art without the traditional formalities of art, this seemed very appropriate to the context and i aimed to incorporate this into my gallery design.

Site choice:

I chose to work with site 1 as i belived it would be challenging to myself to try and design a building in such a awkward site. Although a challenging site there were many benfits of this site, some that site 2 and 3 didnt have. It contained a front and rear access, was within close proximity of car park, has sufficent amounts of passive solar access into external courtyard at the rear of the building. This site is enables the passive solar lighting at rear i am to incorporate in my design as a significant feature.
